LSTAR Hosts All-day Conference Focused on Professional Standards to Enhance Knowledge and Better Serve Consumers

The London and St Thomas Association of REALTORS® (LSTAR) hosted a Professional Day conference this week for its Members, featuring experts in Canada's Anti-Spam Law (CASL) and Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC), as well as senior leadership from the Real Estate Council of Ontario (RECO). The conference was focused on sharing the latest industry updates, heightening awareness of professional standards, and supporting LSTAR Members in managing a very dynamic and robust housing market in London and St Thomas.

"One of the most important decisions consumers will make in their lifetime is purchasing a home, and LSTAR is committed to providing our Members with continuing education, learning and resources to help them best serve the consumer," said John Geha, LSTAR CEO. "We understand the real estate marketplace is under increased scrutiny and this is why the Professional Day conference is so important. Our Members are highly educated and knowledgeable, and the conference helps reinforce our credo: to always protect the needs of the consumer."

The day featured presentations and interactive questions and answer sessions around:

  • Canada’s Anti-Spam Law (CASL) – Allison McLure, Legal Counsel for the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA), shared updates on what Members need to know about the impacts of CASL starting July 1, 2017.
  • Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC) – Geron Beach, Senior Compliance Officer, FINTRAC, outlined what Members need to do for compliance with record keeping, client identification and reporting suspicious transactions.
  • Real Estate Council of Ontario (RECO) – Kelvin Kucey, Deputy Registrar of Regulatory Compliance (RECO), Larry Twells, Compliance Supervisor (RECO) and Glen Thomas, Compliance Supervisor (RECO) shared how RECO is enhancing its complaints process and emphasized the importance of a professional conduct up to the highest ethical standards while serving consumers.

"As licensed REALTORS®, we need to keep professional standards high and our relationships with consumers strong," said Jim Smith, LSTAR President. "It’s been an incredible year for real estate across the region, and REALTORS® have seen multiple offer scenarios and interest from outside the region. Now, more than ever, we need to be laser-focused on why we’re here – and that’s to serve the best interest of the consumer."

In addition to the conference activities, LSTAR’s Brokers Issues Advisory Group held an engaging meeting with Joe Richer, RECO Registrar and Kelvin Kucey, RECO Deputy Registrar of Regulatory Compliance, to further discuss professional standards and best practices in the real estate profession.

"Collaborating with our regulatory senior leadership and industry experts on a regular basis is vital to staying up-to-date with the latest news and resources that enhance the REALTOR® experience for people who are interested in buying homes or selling homes,” Geha said. “LSTAR will continue to offer continuing education to our Members, as we focus on upholding the highest professional standards for the consumers and the communities we passionately serve throughout London and St. Thomas."
